FOUR STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL WELLNESS

by Lynne Depeault

When it comes to taking “One Step at a Time” you may ask yourself where to begin. The experts say the two main areas are diet (health and nutrition) and exercise (fitness). The first step, though, should be a positive attitude and a healthy mind.

SmilingFirst Step
Keeping an open, positive mind increases your ability to deal with everyday stresses. Taking a daily vitamin and getting enough sleep also contribute to your ability to enjoy a positive, energetic life. Keeping a great sense of humor and laughing can give you more energy than coffee or soda. So laugh, smile and give not only yourself but also someone else a boost of energy. If you can’t laugh then sing or plan something fun. Enjoying life is the first step to Wellness.

Second Step
The second step to Wellness is a healthy diet. The experts all say to start with a healthy breakfast. This is the boost you need to help you to perform better at work or school. As you eat your balanced diet during the day remember to stock up on plenty of fiber. You can add it as toppings or snacks, also. When choosing snacks, you should try to pick healthy alternatives to satisfy your cravings. Eat chocolate in moderation. Buy oven-baked snacks. Try frozen yogurt as opposed to ice cream. If you need more taste to it put fruit on top. It will give you fiber as well as taste. One of the most important steps to take is to get enough water during the day. During the day – most dietitians and doctors agree – you need eight glasses of water. This is most important when you start the next step since it not only prevents dehydration but also fatigue as you work out.

JoggingThird Step
The next step to Wellness is exercise. Since you are already keeping your mind fit you now need to work on your body. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous. Just put on a pair of comfortable shoes and go! Park your car away from your office or class and walk those extra steps. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Remember you won’t change overnight. Getting fit takes time. Try to do something every day. Try different forms to keep the motivation going. You can walk, ride a bike, play sports, jog or just take your dog for a walk.

Last Step
Besides keeping your attitude positive, your diet healthy and your body fit remember to celebrate all the little accomplishments. If you have done well all week then it is okay to celebrate with some chocolate (in moderation) or some food that you like. Surround yourself with those who are willing to support you in your steps to Wellness. If you are weak don’t go near the break room if someone brought donuts or sweet bread. Only you can change yourself. Take that first step today!
