Checklist for UTB/TSC State Fire Marshal’s Inspection

The following is a Fire Safety Checklist to help you insure that your areas are ready for a Fire and Safety Inspection in accordance with the National Fire Prevention Act (NFPA).

It is the responsibility of all employees to ensure that their areas are safe for all employees, students and visitors to the campus. All items below should be answered yes. If you answer “NO” to any of the questions below, it is a possible fire hazard that could endanger lives.

Checklist: 

YES NO     1. Is there a fire exit plan posted in the area hallways that shows the egress route(s)?
   
YES NO   2. Once you step outside your office/classroom door, do emergency lights exist to light the egress routes to the outside?
     
YES NO   3. Do all hallways (with at least a 44 inch clearance) have the hallway furniture, equipment, etc, on the same side of the hallway to eliminate weaving down the hallway?
    
YES NO   4. Do stacked boxes and stored materials have a clearance of at least 18 inches from the ceiling for the sprinkler system to function?
    
YES NO   5. Are all wall sockets being properly used? (There should be no multiplex sockets which convert two sockets to six or eight. The interior wall wiring will overheat & ignite the interior wall boards)
     
YES NO   6. Are all electrical power cords equipped with surge protectors and circuit breakers?
    
YES NO   7. Are all electrical cords in public areas covered with cord protectors or taped down and not covered with carpet or rugs?
     
YES NO   8. Do the fire extinguisher’s inspection tags show a "date of last service" from within the last year (month/year)?
    
YES NO   9. Are all bottles and containers in closets and storerooms clearly identified?
    
YES NO   10. Are all areas under stairways and floors clear of any combustible materials?
    
YES NO   11. Are all chemicals properly stored in designated areas?
    
YES NO   12. Is the classroom faculty aware that they are responsible for serving as a fire warden for the evacuation of the students in their class when an alarm is sounded?
   
YES NO   13. Are all hallways clearly marked with exit signs so that people cannot get trapped in a dead end during a fire?
    
YES NO   14. Are exit doors unlocked and clear of materials so that people can exit through them to reach the outside?
    
YES NO   15. Have candles and halogen lamps been removed from use?
     
YES NO   16. Have all supplies been removed from mechanical rooms?
    
YES NO   17. Have all space heaters been disconnected and stored?
   
YES NO 18. Do all electrical outlets have face plates?
   
YES NO 19. Is the hardware for all self closing doors connected and operational?
    
YES NO 20. If 50 or more students, teachers or employees and customers, are in an area; are there two exits from the area?
      
YES NO 21. Do the emergency exit signs work?
   
YES NO 22. Is there a known fire warden assigned to the area?
  
YES NO 23. Have they been trained and equipped with red vest, megaphones and whistles?
  
YES NO 24. Has there been a fire evacuation drill within the past year?
  
YES NO 25. Have the electric extension cords been replaced by a permanent installation?
