Checklist for UTB/TSC State Fire Marshal’s Inspection

The following is a Fire Safety Checklist to help you insure that your areas are ready for the Fire and Safety Inspection that will take place on campus June 4, 5 and 6th by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. 

It is the responsibility of all employees to ensure that their areas are safe for all employees, students and visitors to the campus. All items below should be answered yes. If you answer “NO” to any of the questions below, the University could be cited by the Fire Marshal.

Checklist:

    1. Is there a fire exit plan posted in the area hallways that shows the egress route(s)?
  
  2. Once you step outside your office door, are there emergency lights to light the egress routes to the outside? 
   
  3. Are the entry/egress routes to the offices, at least 44 inches wide? 
    
  4. Do all hallways (with at least a 44 inch clearance) have the hallway furniture, equipment, etc. on the same side of the hallway to eliminate weaving down the hallway? 
  
  5. Are all boxes and stored materials stacked with a clearance of at least 18 inches from the ceiling? 
   
  6. Are all wall sockets being properly used? (There should be no multiplex sockets which convert two sockets to six or eight. The interior wall wiring will overheat & ignite the interior wall boards) 
    
  7. Are all electrical power cords equipped with surge protectors and circuit breakers? 
    
  8. Are all electrical cords in public areas covered with cord protectors or taped down and not covered with carpet or rugs.
     
  9. Are the fire extinguisher’s inspection tags dated June 2001 or later?
   
  10. Are all bottles and containers in closets and storerooms clearly identified? 
   
  11. Are all areas under stairways and floors clear of any materials?
   
  12. Are all chemicals properly stored in designated areas?
   
  13. Is the classroom faculty aware that they are responsible for serving as a fire warden for the evacuation of the students in their class when an alarm is sounded? 
    
  14. Are all hallways clearly marked with exit signs so that people cannot get trapped during a fire?
    
  15. Are exit doors unlocked and clear of materials so that people can exit through them and reach the outside?
    
  16. Are all candles strictly for decorative use and not lit at any time? 
   
  17. Have all halogen lamps been replaced by other non-heat generating lamps? 
    
  18. Have all space heaters been disconnected and stored?
