Subj: Overtime and Sick Leave Changes
Greetings:
I hope this message finds each of you doing well as we welcome new and
returning students to campus for another challenging and rewarding
academic year. The Federal Government from time to time amends the rules
applicable to overtime compensation for non-exempt employees. Most
recently the United States Department of Labor has issued new rules
concerning the classification of certain employees and how they are to
be paid. These new rules help to ensure that all employees are
adequately compensated for their contribution to the University.
The University has identified about fifty (50) employees who will be
affected by the new rules. In the coming weeks you may receive notice
from Human Resources to attend a mandatory training session covering the
new rules. Please make your attendance at this meeting a priority so
that we may ensure that all of our employees are in compliance with
these Federal guidelines.
In addition to changes to some employee’s classification and job titles,
a change has been implemented in the computation of sick leave.
Effective September 20, 2004 all employees, faculty, staff or otherwise
shall deduct one hour of sick leave for each hour absent from work due
to illness or for a medical/dental appointment. If an individual misses
a full day, then eight (8) hours of sick leave shall be reflected, as
used, on the employee’s absence report and time card, if applicable.
This is a very serious matter and I know each and every one of you will
rise to meet this new challenge and comply with these new rules. Failure
to do so may result in disciplinary actions. Thank you in advance for
your cooperation.
